This type of teaching is focused on experiments and research. The students do not design furniture, they study the basic elements of shape, proportion and mass.

For instance, Erling taught together with calligrapher Regitze Steinbruch in a study they called Calligraphy and Chairs.

The students worked with signs in 2D and 3D on paper and Styropor. First in scale 1:5, later in full scale.
