Veneer furniture
Veneer is a natural product consisting of thin wooden sheets (typically 0.4–2 mm), made by slicing the tree trunk with a big knife.
Technical advantages
1. Forming: The thin sheets bend easily, and the veneer layers are glued together in a mould to create a curved shape.
2. The laminated construction is very strong, as the fibers of the wood follow the shape.
3. Material savings: The wood is used efficiently. If a curved shape were to be cut out of a solid piece of wood, there would be a lot of waste, and the fibers would not follow the shape.
Production Process
1. The tree trunk is processed by knife cutting into uniform veneer sheets.
2. Gluing: The veneer layers are glued together with a thermosetting glue. For items with a large surface, such as a seat, the veneers are glued together crosswise. For narrow items, such as chair legs, the fibres in all layers run in the same direction.
3. The curing of the glue usually is done with high-frequency induced heat, so that the finished item can be taken out of the mold after a few minutes.
